A growing body of scientific evidence supports the relationship between diet and long-term cognitive health. This third article in a four part series on take aways that you can benefit from today, out of the annual AAIC meeting will highlight the findings on diet and cognition. The prior two posts explored the relationship between sleep and cognition and exercise and your brain health and next week we will explore how socialization (the face to face kind not the Facebook kind) is fundamental to long term cognitive health.

You are what you eat

At the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference 2017 last week in London, results from four large population-based studies suggested a link between healthy eating practices and better cognition when you’re older. I listened as my fellow neuroscientists and behavioral psychologists discussed how certain lifestyle and dietary choices could have a significant impact on long-term health. It seems like common sense, but most people choose to delay healthy eating until it’s too late.

It’s hard to make changes when you’re young, vibrant and healthy. We don’t want to think about how our actions and dietary choices today will impact our health 30 years down the road. And many people think that if they stay slim while eating a poor diet they will not face the health consequences of those poor nutrition choices, but they are wrong and in medicine we have a term for such people, TOFI.

In recent years, the link between diet and cognition has grown and attracted significant attention from more than clinical psychologists and neuroscientists. Different diets made their way into the media and Hollywood spotlight- Paleo, Atkins, the South Beach diet, and the recent Whole 30 diet craze– all of which offer shiny promises to improve your mind and body.

But do they really?

While these Hollywood diets go in and out of fashion, the Mediterranean Diet — comprised of eating mostly plants (vegetables, fruit, beans) – has maintained its golden reputation, backed by decades of scientific research. Studies have again and again shown that this diet protects against obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Now evidence also suggests that this diet could lessen the risk for cognitive decline and lifetime risk of dementia.

The Journal of Neurology recently published a study that confirmed the easy-to-follow Mediterranean diet can have lasting benefits for brain health. Another study of over 6000 older adults showed a 30-35% lower risk of memory impairment when sticking to a Mediterranean-based diet. CNN recently reported that people who closely adhered to a diet similar to the Mediterranean diet saw a 53% lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s.

What exactly is the Mediterranean diet?

The Mediterranean diet is mostly plant-based, with an emphasis on limiting saturated fat. This diet suggests a high intake of fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, fish, and unsaturated fatty acids such as olive oil and avocado. It also encourages a moderate intake of dairy, wine, and poultry. Finally, it recommends a low intake of red meats and sweets.

Usually the term ‘diet’ conjures up images of bland, boring, unsatisfying food. Part of the Mediterranean Diet’s success is that it’s focused on hearty, tasty food, so it can easily become a lifestyle change rather than a chore.

Unlike many fad diets, the Mediterranean diet does not advocate for a large restriction of carbohydrates. The guidelines instead suggest that healthy carbohydrates be consumed—those found in vegetables and whole grains. This gives another benefit to the Mediterranean diet: it’s high in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds that combat the oxidative processes that occur within the aging brain. Oxidative damage is a common attribute in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients. The main components of the Mediterranean diet (e.g. fruits, vegetables, wine, olive oil) provide high levels of antioxidants that slow and/or prevent this damage.

The evidence speaks for itself

As someone clinically trained in healthcare, I believe in hard evidence and facts. It’s hard to ignore the growing body of literature that the modern western diet may account for the rise we see in many disease conditions from Alzheimer’s to Diabetes to even (the latest studies suggest) Depression and Anxiety. I began eating a Mediterranean Diet in my late 20s and my physician tells me that at 46 I have the “numbers of a 30 year old” at my annual physical.

I know this choice may not be for everyone, but I strongly encourage each of you to consider your daily food choices and know that your actions today could affect your brain health down the road.

We are finding out more and more as more and more is being REVEALED, that is turning the thoughts and beliefs on HOW we have lived life and WHAT is best for us in order to THRIVE !

I had to go through so much pain in my 20’s and 30’s from my monthly menses on 1st day. I only found out about MAGNESIUM towards the end of that time and how it was lacking, and in such small amounts, that takes away the pain. Hmmm. We are a delicate balance, aren’t we ?  If we can keep the chemical cocktail that was us upon birth, we can keep aches and pains at bay. We don’t really focus on that, especially as we age.

The average human body contains about 25 grams of magnesium, one of the six essential minerals that must be supplied in the diet.

Ecuador ‘TRUE SELF’ LightJourney 2016

Flew out of LA on Jan.14, after 3 days of waiting for a new passport – yippee.  I showed up on a Monday, gave them my old one and hoped they would rush it through and get it to me by my fly-out day. no problema. of course i pray alot, for everything these days.

it’s been 2 weeks and i’m now just arrived at my new home in the Andes; Cotacachi. An adobe house on 3 acres of a working farm – YAHOO !! horses, dogs, pigs, 1 chicken.  the whole area is in a valley between two amazing old volcanoes; Mama Cotacachi and Papa Imbabura.  we are the 1st 3 volunteers for this new teaching program, living with the teachers who are from las cruces, new mexico, but now moved here.  we are part of a NPO that was created by a Canadian man who wants to help the world, starting in Ecuador.  We teach english to the locals, for free to them.

I landed in Quito on Jan. 15, and immediately got on a bus to Tena, that takes you over the mountains into the jungle side.

I thought I was going to Russia to this school to study with them there to pick up their ‘Essential Info’, didn’t make it. Not enough time or money and couldn’t leave my only source of income, my business, that I thought no one else could run. Well, it wasn’t financially viable anyway.

Since then, all I’ve done is move in this direction here on Maui and soon, my dream of Maui Farm School, will be a reality, based on the ‘essentials’ noted below, by one of the best educators on the planet – in my book.

The main thing we create with is our thought, our attitude to- wards the world, our desire to see the world harmoniously.

Here is what we always have to affirm, no matter what! No wars live “essen- tially”! No conflict lives as an a pri- ority act! That is, to work on this all the time, to go in this direction. And here is what I mean with a priory, essential living. That is where we have come to, as a way of life; we affirm it everywhere – – in relations to each other, in rela- tions towards mother and father. What kind of relations should they be? Harmonious! What kind of re- lations should we have towards nature? Certainly harmonious! We should listen to it, otherwise it will not accept us as a part of it. And so on, and so on. For example: I tell you about Light. You are Light. It is a given.

One has to react immediately, it is a human obligation, but what is the purpose? It is for peace sav- ing, for life saving, for its prolonga- tion, for its rejuvenation, for beauty. T

beauty is all here in this “living tis- sue of life”. Do it in beauty, in har- mony, in love, in truth. I mean that every time I settled down, sorting things out, I did an essential thing. If I did not settle down, did NOT sort things out – I would have done a “non-essential” thing. That’s why, when children sit in non-es- sential conditions for a long time, when they have to learn every- thing during 11, or even 12 years first, that is, when we pull them out from this “living matrix,” and say: ‘But they have no time to pay at- tention to connectedness, be- cause a conventional teacher forces them to write something…’. That is when they deviate from this living matrix, and act, as though for the sake of it, but hav- ing delayed contact with it for so long, they have already forgotten what they have come for…

That is the job, the essential duty of a human being – to introduce har- mony and beauty as a vision of the ideal world.

We have to open the doors of cramped educational institutions in order to turn the children towards the Earth. This is a cosmic need because when they work them- selves, when they make Earth more beautiful, they are getting educated, and this is the true Edu- cation. (Ed.: See also our article about Sepp Holzer in SOL #2 and his conviction that all educational institutions should have an appro- priately sized farm attached to it: kindergartens should have a school-garden, all the way to col- lege, which should have a farm at- tached.)

I just wanted to say, that the main thing now is not so much to ask the question: «How we do it?», as to determine for what purpose, in general, we do it at all. Because the child’s life does not end in an educational institu- tion, nor does it begin in an edu- cational institution. It begins and ends with its real cooperation with life, with everything that oc- curs. I mean that we have to bring them into what occurs as soon as possible, and to think to- gether with them, and to change everything according to the feel- ing, the conscience. Here is the core. Namely, that the child is a phenomenal occurrence, He or She is Your Majesty, He or She is Your Highness. And we have to look at him or her as we look at a Supreme Being.

For “dessert,” I am happy that I sang a song – that’s one thing at least that may stay with you.

Magnesium & Iodine ~Again, but more important NOW

Says…about Magnesium

For purposes of cellular detoxification and tissue purification, the most effective form of magnesium is magnesium chloride, which has a strong excretory effect on toxins and stagnant energies stuck in the tissues of the body, drawing them out through the pores of the skin. Chloride is required to produce a large quantity of gastric acid each day and is also needed to stimulate starch-digesting enzymes.

In addition to its functions as an electrolyte, chloride combines with hydrogen in the stomach to make hydrochloric acid, a powerful digestive enzyme that is responsible for the breakdown of proteins, absorption of other metallic minerals, and activation of intrinsic factor, which in turn absorbs vitamin B12.

Magnesium is an important part of the iodine treatment plan. Magnesium deficiency is very common. Magnesium is nature’s relaxing agent. Magnesium levels (via red blood cell magnesium levels) should be assessed and supplementation instituted. Magnesium supplementation will likely ensure optimal results with iodine.”

Says…about Iodine

Anyone who tells you to stay away from iodine is a medical idiot. Actually that statement does not cover the story of medical cruelty and the pharmaceutical terrorism that is centered on iodine phobia that is rampant in the medical world today. One of my neighbors, who has cancer, recently visited the Gerson Clinic in Mexico and came back with a protocol suggesting one drop of Lugol’s a day.[1] I of course have him taking much more.

Dr. Gabriel Cousens recently wrote, “Recently Dr. Mercola surprisingly stated that the highest amount of daily iodine intake should be no more than 400 micrograms. This is only slightly higher than the FDA recommendation, which is 150-290 micrograms daily, dependent upon age, gender and life cycle. However, it is dramatically less than what some of the leading iodine medical experts suggest, as closer to, at least, 12-18 milligrams daily, approximately 45 times higher. Why this discrepancy? And how can Dr. Mercola, who is often so correct in his understanding, in my opinion, miss the mark exponentially?”

Cousens states, “Historically, as early as 1911, people normally took between 300,000-900,000 micrograms daily without incident. This is over 2,000 times more than Dr. Mercola’s recommendation. How is it that now only 1/5,000th of this dose is now considered safe? In 1948 there was a poorly performed and, since then, never replicated study alleging what is known as the Wolff-Chaikoff effect. The Wolff-Chaikoff effect suggested that theoretically hypothyroidism could occur as a result of excess iodine. This study indicated a decreased dosage to 2 milligrams daily would be safer. (This is still an amount 5 times higher than what Dr. Mercola is recommending.) Even the Food and Nutritional Board at the Institute of Medicine has set the tolerable upper limit of 1,100 micrograms of iodine daily (3 times higher than Dr. Mercola’s recommendation). Other researchers have used between 3,000 and 6,000 micrograms/day to prevent goiter (14 times higher than Dr. Mercola’s recommendation). Iodine is found in every single one of our body’s hundred trillion cells. Without adequate iodine levels life is impossible. Iodine is the universal health nutrient and brings health on many levels.”
